Katherine
Located approximately 320 km south of Darwin, Katherine is a vibrant regional town and cultural hub of the Northern Territory. Often described as the place “where the outback meets the tropics,” Katherine offers a perfect blend of rugged natural beauty, Aboriginal heritage, outdoor adventure, and relaxed country charm.
At the heart of the region lies the Katherine Gorge, part of the spectacular Nitmiluk National Park. Carved through ancient sandstone by the Katherine River, the gorge consists of a series of 13 breathtaking gorges with towering cliffs, tranquil waterholes, and lush greenery. Exploring Nitmiluk is a must-do—visitors can take a boat cruise, paddle a canoe through the gorge’s narrow passages, or hike along the rim for panoramic views. The experience is both peaceful and awe-inspiring, especially at sunrise or sunset.
Nitmiluk is also rich in Aboriginal culture. The land is jointly managed by the Jawoyn people, the traditional custodians, and Parks Australia. Interpretive tours and cultural experiences offer insight into Dreamtime stories, bush medicine, rock art, and the deep spiritual connection between the land and its people. The Cicada Lodge, a luxury eco-resort in the park, provides immersive cultural stays and fine dining with Indigenous ingredients.
Beyond the gorge, Katherine offers plenty to see and do. The Katherine Hot Springs—located just minutes from town—are crystal-clear thermal pools nestled in a palm-lined setting. They’re free to enter and ideal for a relaxing soak year-round.
For history lovers, the Katherine Outback Experience by Tom Curtain provides an entertaining and educational look at station life, working dogs, and horse training, with live music and storytelling. The School of the Air and Katherine Museum offer fascinating glimpses into life in the remote Outback, from early settlers to wartime history.
Nature is always close by. The nearby Edith Falls (Leliyn), part of Nitmiluk National Park, is a popular stop for swimming and hiking. The cascading falls and cool freshwater pools are especially inviting during the warmer months. Further afield, Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park showcases a rare tropical limestone cave system filled with impressive stalactites and local wildlife, including rare ghost bats.
Katherine is also a gateway to the Savannah Way, connecting Queensland, the NT, and Western Australia. Many travellers stop here as part of a broader Top End journey, making it an ideal base for road trips, 4WD adventures, and caravan holidays.
